ANZ Stadium

Purpose built as the main Stadium and centrepiece for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, ANZ Stadium was the jewel in the crown of the most successful summer Olympics ever held.Purpose-built for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, when it opened in 1999 it had a seating capacity of more than 110,000, which made it the largest Olympic stadium in history and at that time the largest stadium in Australia. It was the

venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, the athletics events and the football final. Cathy Freeman won the Gold medal in the 400 metres, Jai Taurima won the Silver medal in the men’s long jump, and Tatiana Grigorieva won the Silver medal in the women’s pole vault.

ANZ Stadium’s roof is equal in size to 115 tennis courts and it collects rain run-off, which is used to irrigate the playing field and flush toilets. Each roof arch is longer than the combined wingspan of four jumbo jets.
